Lucid dreams

55 %have had at least one lucid dream

A lucid dream is one where you know you're dreaming while the dream goes on. Pooling 34 studies from 1966 to 2016, researchers estimated that about 55 % of people have had at least one lucid dream (95 % confidence interval 49–62 %), and about 23 % have one or more a month (Saunders et al., 2016).

How common are lucid dreams?

Saunders and colleagues (2016) ran a quality-effects meta-analysis of 50 years of research. Across 34 studies of prevalence, the mean estimate for having had at least one lucid dream was 55 % (95 % CI 49–62 %).

Across 25 studies of frequency, the mean estimate for having lucid dreams once a month or more was 23 % (95 % CI 20–25 %). That is monthly, not weekly.

How sure are these numbers?

The studies differ a lot in who they asked and how, so these are pooled estimates, not exact rates. They say lucid dreaming is common, not that any one person will have one.
